Compelling cities

Scotland’s three largest cities are surrounded by wonderful scenery and attractions, which allow group tours to include both city and countryside visits.

Each city also acts as an excellent base from which to explore our slightly further afield places: perfect for half- and full-day trips.

Edinburgh

Scotland’s capital has plenty of stories to tell. Gladstone’s Land on the Royal Mile gives a flavour of what city life was like 400 years ago in the crammed Old Town tenements. This contrasts with the elegant, spacious rooms of the 18th-century Georgian House.

Newhailes House in nearby Musselburgh is a rococo delight, once host to society balls and Scottish Enlightenment intellectuals. Country houses, glorious gardens and architectural oddities add further interest and variety to group tours in and around Edinburgh.

Aberdeen

The proximity of the ‘Granite City’ to the heart of Scotland’s Castle Trail allows you to add castle visits to both your short break and touring holiday itineraries in and around the city.

Ancient strongholds, stately homes and family estates reveal centuries of Scottish architecture. Some have royal associations; others are home to important art collections, historic gardens and established nature reserves. Craigievar Castle is even said to have inspired the famous Walt Disney Cinderella castle.

Glasgow

Scotland’s largest city is known as the ‘dear green place’ with a host of beautiful parks and gardens to explore in and around Glasgow. The city’s lucrative trading past is evident in mansions like Greenbank House, designed for wealthy Glasgow merchants.

The Tenement House is a remarkable time capsule of ordinary Glasgow life in the early 20th century, while Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s masterpiece at the Hill House in Helensburgh is within easy reach.
