Alice and Dougie got married at Hill of Tarvit in May 2023, a family favourite spot near Alice’s parents’ home, known for its beauty and tranquillity. Their day was special, filled with love, laughter, oysters and a surprise pipe band. We spoke to them to find out a little more.

Why did you choose Hill of Tarvit?

Hill of Tarvit is not far from Alice’s mum and dad’s house and is a family favourite for picnics and dog walks over the years. It really is a hidden gem and it’s so peaceful, not to mention beautiful. We loved the idea of having our wedding at a place that felt like being at someone’s home, without actually having it at home! The team at Hill of Tarvit were fantastic and so friendly – by the end of the wedding prep they really felt like family!

Did you have an idea of what you wanted your wedding day to be like before you started planning?

We wanted our wedding to be relaxed, fun and special but without losing sight of what an important milestone it was for us and the traditional aspects of a Scottish wedding. We kept reminding ourselves that whatever happened, being surrounded by our friends and family (we had 112 guests!) when making a commitment to each other was the most important part.

What did you decide on as the main inspiration behind the look/atmosphere of your wedding?

Although we didn’t have a rigid theme, our main inspiration behind elements of our day came from Hill of Tarvit itself! The gardens at the house are beautiful and we wanted to incorporate this into the look and feel of our wedding. We incorporated the spring flowers grown in the garden (jasmine, roses, wisteria) throughout all of our stationery, and having our wedding in a Sperry tent marquee meant we could really bring the outside in, regardless of the weather.

How did you personalise your big day?

We love to travel so we named our tables after some of our favourite holidays and trips.

One of Doug’s favourite food is oysters, so we had The Oyster Man shuck fresh oysters for every guest. We are also big foodies, and Alice’s sister (and maid of honour) is a food stylist so she created a menu based on our favourite foods with meaningful elements too. Our starter was Perthshire venison carpaccio (Doug grew up in Perth) and our main was Pittenweem halibut (Alice grew up in the East Neuk of Fife).

Alice was also driven to the church in her dad’s precious Jaguar Mark 2, something our family had planned since she was a little girl.

What were the highlights of the day for you?

So many! The whole day was just filled with so much fun, laughter and love. Walking into the church and seeing so many smiling faces was breathtaking; walking through confetti down the steps of Hill of Tarvit was gorgeous; and dancing the night away under a glitterball was just the most fun.

What was your favourite wedding detail?

The Oyster Man was a big hit with all our guests, even to the oyster ‘first timers’ who tried their first oyster that day and loved it! We also provided complimentary slippers for dancing feet, which was welcomed by lots of people and meant the dancing was even more wild!

Before the wedding we realised that we had 7 pipers attending the wedding so we arranged a surprise pipe band performance in the evening. The pipers included Doug, the Father of the Bride, the Best Man, groomsmen and family. They were fantastic – it was a spectacular sight to see them march across the lawn.

Did you have a ‘star supplier’?

All our suppliers were incredible and so lovely to work with. But if we had to pick, we’d say our marquee company, Elegant Pitches. From the very first conversation to the day itself, the team were so friendly, personable and professional and brought our dream marquee to life.

“The main compliment we got was the joy and love throughout the day – everyone mixed and got on so well, and when we walked into the marquee we really felt the love! It was so special. We had the perfect day.”
